The Mass Effect series has the advantage of an entirely fictional universe, which is supported by an extensive codex providing backstory. World building: Environments are crafted with care and attention to detail, they feel like real places. In my opinion, John Marston from RDR is a fascinating protagonist with a deep backstory that unfolds beautifully, whereas Shepard from Mass Effect is more of a blank slate, who is however supported by a varied and interesting cast of companions, chief among them Garrus, who is, without a doubt, just the coolest guy in videogame history.
Writing: Both have memorable dialogues and characters, interesting stories to follow. You will notice an increase in visual fidelity as the Mass Effect series progresses, especially from the first to the second game. Both do have issues on PS3 however, with RDR running at a relatively low resolution and some of the Mass Effect games having frame rate issues. Presentation and atmosphere: Great visuals, excellent voice acting, outstanding soundtracks.
In addition to the above, EA is currently offering a fun little Mass Effect key art creation tool to “spotlight your best friends, true loves, and favorite squaddies.”
